Biography:

Bill Fenimore, author, educator, lector, naturalist, birding guide and businessman owns and operates the Layton, Wild Bird Center. He is author of 50 US State Backyard Birds Guide series, introductory level books on the joys and “How To” of birding.

Before retirement, Bill Fenimore was the Chief Operating Officer of Horizon Snack Foods (HSF) and President of Horizon's Transportation and Distribution Company in Salt Lake City. HSF manufacture's and distributes snack food products throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Bill has enjoyed a life long love for the outdoors, especially dealing with wild birds. Governor Jon Huntsman recently appointed Fenimore to his newly commissioned Great Salt Lake Advisory Council. The GSL Advisory Council is charged with developing a vision and master plan for the Great Salt Lake. Today, Fenimore represents the Utah Audubon Council as their Policy Advocate. He represented Utah Audubon on the Utah Wolf Working Group responsible for developing a Wolf Management Plan for Utah. Bill is an At Large Representative for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Northern Regional Advisory Council. Bill was a Trustee of the Swaner Nature Preserve in Park City. He has been a Board Member of the Ogden Nature Center and is a Wasatch Audubon Chapter member. He is a volunteer Naturalist for Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources. Bill serves as the Utah Audubon Council representative on the Rich County Cooperative Resource Management committee.

So that Bill can pursue his birding interest, especially educating the public about birds and their critical habitat needs, he opened the Wild Bird Center in Layton when retiring from his professional career in 2001. Bill gives seminars, workshops and leads field trips on nature, with a bird focus through the Wild Bird Center. Fenimore will be the key note speaker for the St. George Winter Bird Festival January 2009. He has conducted workshops and seminars on Backyard Birding Basics, Birds and Blooms, Landscaping for Wildlife and Funding Wildlife in the new Millennium at the National Wildlife Federation Family Summit 2006, Utah Wildlife Society 2006, Great Salt Lake and Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge Bird Festival's, Western Birding Symposium and Utah State Universities Master Gardener Program. The Wild Bird Center presents workshops to Home & Garden Clubs, Scouting groups, schools, senior centers, birding clubs, fraternal organizations and conservation groups. The Wild Bird Center currently hosts and manages the Utah Rare Bird hot line and DWR’s web page link for Utah Bird Sightings.

Currently, Bill is working with a Utah legislative coalition of conservation and sporting groups with wildlife interests on an initiative to enhance Watchable Wildlife opportunities in Utah while bringing the nonconsumptive community into a financially supportive role via a fee that would be paid by those entering Wildlife Management Areas (WMA’s) if not already in possession of a current federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, Utah hunting or fishing license.

A recent birding fact sheet promoting Utah as a birding destination was contributed by Bill in partnership with the Utah Department of Tourism.
